Roadmap to Your Teaching Career

Figuring out how to move from student to professional can be difficult sometimes. While all of your college classes and student teaching experiences are specifically designed to help you transition from student to teacher, learning how to negotiate the professional realm can be tough! So, here are a few ideas for ways that you - the college student - can start preparing yourself for the day after graduation.

Presentations / workshops:

  • Serve as a presenter or participate in a panel at a regional workshop or a state conference. Demonstrate your knowledge of education-related issues and gain experience in a professional development setting.
  • Professional reading materials:
  • Begin reading education-related publications. Look for well-respected journals or magazines, such as the Phi Delta Kappan, and begin familiarizing yourself with the hot topics and critical issues within the field.
  • Networking:
Look for opportunities to speak with teachers, principals, or administrators within the school district or state. This is an opportunity for you to showcase your skill set, as well as make important connections that could be influential in landing a teaching position later.
